I think this is the Firstever Authentic Sales Report of Kuselan Audio. Happy that (y)our blog takes that privilege.
When I decided to prepare Exclusive Sales report, I wished to start first with the two shops – Super Tracks and Supreme Audio in Richie Street where the shops were beautifully decorated like a traditional marriage hall entrance. I just had a casual enquiry about the sales of the audio. And the shop owners told that the response was mind-boggling. And early morning itself many retailers have purchased the CDs and cassettes in lots and transported to their respective locations. (I couldn’t collect any statistics from these shops since I met them on the day of release itself)
In Chennai suburb areas, the stocks sold out completely and guess what already second set of orders have been issued and purchasing has started for that from whole sale dealers.
In cities – CD is the choice while semi-urban go for cassettes
Some other shops affirmed that after Sivaji, they could witness a hot sale. In Urban areas the CDs are best selling and in semi-urban and rural areas the cassettes are still the favourite. Actually I have been thinking that those who own cars, prefer only CDs against cassettes. But a shop owner revealed that most who possess car have purchased cassettes equal to that of CDs. This is because the cars that come from showroom contain only cassette player while CD player has to be installed on your own.
Our Blog EXCLUSIVE
On behalf of our blog, I decided to speak with some music stores to prepare a sales report of Kuselan audio. Since it is a tough task, I included one of my friend Vijayakumar in this mission and we spoke to many music stores across the Chennai city and a famous shop in Madurai and from that I present herewith an exclusive sales report of Kuselan audio. I was preparing this report for the past few days whenever pieces of time was available.
A tough task indeed
Really it is a tough task to extract information from these stores as they were hesitant to divulge any fact regarding sales. After convincing them, we managed to get a few valuable infos which we share with you.

Disclaimer: This is the report collected from 'A' centres in Tamil Nadu. If you go to other states, abroad and deep inside B and C centres (Semi-urban and rural areas), where Superstar's flag flies further high, only Superstar movie's audio sell the best and most. (Just refer to Arun's report from Bangalore at the end)
Sivaji - unbeatable!!
Most of the stores say that Sivaji is the top most seller till date and no other movie released after Sivaji was able to match it. Possibly Robot will break that record.
Dasavatharam surprise
What surprising to me was many music stores that I spoke revealed that Dasavatharam audio did quite well and also can be termed as one of the top sellers of 2008. Hmmm…Chan magic?
Most of these traders feel that the name Rajini itself is enough to push the CDs and cassettes.
You should keep in mind the below points before diving into the report.
1) Kuselan is not Rajini’s full-length movie and he will be hardly there in the movie for 60 minutes only. In simpler words his role is an extended cameo role.
2) GV Prakash is an upcoming music director and hardly 22 years old. With him, the audio was able to clear off 2,00,000 nos of CDs in 24 hrs.
3) GV Prakash’s earlier movie’s audio rights was sold for Rs.20 lakhs. For Kuselan it is 11 times higher. (Rs.2.25 crores)
4) This is just ‘opening’ trend. Once the movie releases and people start watching songs and visuals the trend would be different.
The report is not manipulated or exaggerated even a little bit. 100% genuine!!
Very first lets go to audio world’s undisputed emperor Keestu Ganam of Madurai.
Keestu Ganam says it is ‘EXCELLENT’
Keestu Ganam’s Regional Sales Manager Mr.Ramkumar said, “If the response for the Kuselan audio to be termed in single word – it is EXCELLENT.”
We procured 1200 cds and 350 cassettes on July1 and within 24 hrs 1000 cds and all of the cassettes have been sold out. We have placed our consective orders and receiving consignments daily from Chennai. We expected a good sale. But not this much high.
Ques: How is the sale when compared with Sivaji?
Keestu Ganam: First of all we should not compare Sivaji with Kuselan. Sivaji is a combination of stalwarts like Rahman and Shankar with Rajini. And moreover it there was AVM Productions. But Kuselan’s case is different.
Ques:How could you term the response in percentage with Sivaji’s?
Keestu Ganam:Since you are asking I am telling. If for Sivaji it was 100%, Kuselan it is 70%. Kuselan is purely by Rajini power.
Ques:Shall we classify the audio as hit?
Keestu Ganam:Why hit? It is superhit. The first three day sales for any audio determine its fate. Because we could sell maximum number of CDs during this time only. It is similar to the opening of a film. If we go by that Kuselan album is a super hit. And people from various walks of life like the songs very much.
Ques:Can you list other movies which had a good sale in audio in recent times?
Keestu Ganam:
Sivaji
Billa
Dasavatharam
Yaaradi Nee Mohini
And now Kuselan.
Out of these movies YNM is a surprise and silent hit and we had a decent business for a prolonged period while the movie was performing quite good in box office.
Ques:Will Kuselan be able to top this list?
Keestu Ganam: It's tough to say now. But I hope it will. Once the movie release we expect the sales would go up by three times than that of now. I believe it will cross the Sivaji audio sales in coming days.
Ques:Can you brief us your experience on Kuselan audio with Rajini fans? And their response?
Keestu Ganam:They have been pestering me for many days prior the release date of the audio. They would continously call us and ask, “Sir, when is the audio coming,” “Sir, they say in Chennai it has released. When it will be available here?” etc.etc.,
During the previous day of release, they didn’t allow us even to sleep and continoulsy asking us whether the stock from Chennai arrived or not? Byt 3.30 am we got the first load and by 3.45 am itself they made us to sell the first pack even before we opened our show room. (in Periyar bus-stand branch)
Ques:Overall what would you say about Kuselan audio?
Keestu Ganam:Just the name “Rajini” itself is enough to make any audio hot. And it has been proved yet another time.
I have promised to visit Mr.Ramkumar once I come to Madurai.
This is the verdict from South. What Chennai city says?
Landmark, Nungambakkam
“We had lots of pre-release enquiries for the audio and the response is quite good. The first day registered a thundering sale and now the sale is going on at brisk pace.”
They also admit that Kuselan sales can’t be compared with Sivaji but it is better than Dasavatharam. Surely Kuselan sales can be termed as ‘Best Seller’ in last six months (2008)
Lakshman Sruthi Musicals, Vadapalani
Here too they say that they got innumerous pre-release enquiries. And guess what, on the day of audio release (July 1st) they have opened the shop at mornign 7.00 am itself to cope up with the demand against regular time of 10.00 am.
As they expected the shop registered a thumping sales in cassettes and CDs. They affirm that though the sales won’t match with that of Sivaji it will come closer to its sales – in their shop.
They added that Dasavatharam audio did well than expected and Kuselan is expected to beat that. They hope that once the movie releases the shop will sell more and more CDs and cassettes as they are one of the perennial audio stores in the city.
Music World, Anna Nagar
They report that on the release day the sale was extra-ordinary. And now going smooth. But it couldn’t be compared with previous Rajini movies. They also opine that once the movie releases and people start see visuals the sales may pick the momentum.
They reveal that in 2008 three albums performed well so far. And they are: Dasavatharam, Dham Dhoom and Santosh Subramaniam.
But added that they are yet to witness a music blockbuster for 2008. And in coming days Kuselan may possibly acquire that position if visuals turn out to be a feast.
Market Verdict
Kuselan audio has got a very good opening and is gaining momentum in sales day by day. Once the movie releases the sales would shoot up further. Though the movie can’t be compared with other Rajini movies which come with stalwarts combination, this audio is expected to be one of the best sellers in Rajini movies and also likely to capture a place in top sellers of 2008.
Fans verdict
GV Prakash has proved himself and it seems that he took special care in churning out the tunes. Cinema Cinema, Perinba Paechukaaran can be termed as instant hits. Om Zarere would become more popular once seen with visuals. Sollamma and Chaaral are there for melody lovers and family audience. Over all – an album packed with necessary ingredients keeping in mind, the multi-class audience of Superstar.

How is the sales in Bangalore? (Arun reports)
Here in Bangalore I have enquired with 2 audio shops - both located in Jayanagar 3rd Block opposite to each other - regarding Kuselan's audio sales.
1. Calypso: They are selling 60 to 70 CDs every day & another 25 to 30 casettes a day. Their verdict is More than a Hit for Kuselan & they expect it to double or evn treble once Kuselan releases.
Remember, this is the same shop which tried to (even now the sale is going on) PUSH Dasavataram Cds along with Sivaji CDs. They say Sivaji audio is still moving well.
2. Temptations: This is a recently opened audio shop bang opoosite to Calypso. They are selling ONLY CDs of Kuselan & they term it as excellant. They sell an average of 40 CDs daily. The shop owner says its because of Rajini.
Overall, Kuselan audio seems to be rocking & come Aug. 1st, it can only become bigger & bigger.
