Nostalgia: When Superstar returned from spiritual tour after election results...

The following is one of the glorious moments in Superstar’s life.

During 1996 elections, after his revolutionary speech in SunTv, Superstar met Kalaignar (he was opposition alliance leader then) at his residence before his Kathmandu trip. He conveyed him greetings in advance for the forthcoming election victory and also said that he would meet him in Fort St.George as CM once he returns.

After that, election fever started gripping the entire state.

Superstar’s historical campaign

Superstar’s TV campaign and appeal created ripples all over Tamil Nadu. Tamil Maanila Congress – just a few days old party gained over night popularity. The photos and stickers of Superstar with Annamalai cycle were printed in lakhs and lakhs and distributed all over the state. His speech was made to penetrate even in deep rural areas as the DMK-TMC combine understood that it is first and last chance to topple the rule of Jayalalitha who was considered ever unbeatable then.

Elections were held.

Jaya’s defeat

Jayalalitha was defeated even in her own constituency Bargur. DMK-TMC combine swept the polls with thunderous and record margin of votes in all constituencies. (All time record)

Success meeting without Superstar

To celebrate election success, a public meeting was held by DMK-TMC combine in Chennai. Everybody forgot Superstar. None of the speakers took care to thank him in a special way in their speech. His name was uttered one among many names. (I think that too didn’t happen)

Kalaignar took oath as Chief Minister in Rajbhavan. Lot’s of dignitaries attended the event. But Superstar was not there.

The meaning of KarmaYogi

That day a newspaper wrote in editorial that “Superstar who was major responsible for the change was not there, to claim the cause for success. And also reminded his words that he would meet Kalaignar in secretariat as a Chief Minister. The paper stressed that he purposely abstained from the event and wanted to stay away from it and so he left for abroad. Even after results declared he was not available for comments. That is the true menaning of Karma Yogi.”

Could you imagine other actors here?

Just imagine what would happen if some other actor was in his place? I couldn’t even imagine the flutter they would have created.

Ninathadhai Mudipavan…

Later Superstar returned from his Himalayas trip on 5th June 1996 as a success hero. His arrival made headlines.

As vowed, he met Kalaignar at secretariat. And conversed with the press people who were waiting there. (You should note that actually the press meet was not arranged. A big group of journalists were waiting at secretariat when they came to know about Superstar’s meet with Kalaignar.)

A humble interview

Superstar answered humbly all the questions that journos asked.

(Those question and answers and Superstar's meeting with Vajpai in Mumbai will follow in next posting of Nostalgia)

Box Item

When will Rajini shave his beard?

Rajinikanth has not yet shaved his beard which he grew before the elections. Today when he was talking to the press reporters, he was constantly running his hands over the beard.

Malai Malar reporter asked him "When are you going to shave the beard?" Immediately Rajinikanth burst into a loud laughter and replied "Before I go for shooting I will definitely shave it." – Translation by Sharath Kannan
